“FLOWERS”: THE CHIOSTRO DEL BRAMANTE CELEBRATES FLOWERS IN ART WITH AN EXHIBITION IN ITALY DEDICATED TO THEIR BEAUTY AND POWER
From February 14 to January 15, 2026, “Flowers. Art from the Renaissance to Augmented Reality” presents a journey where the endlessly evocative power of flowers emerges. The show brings together art, science, and technology creating a universal narrative that spans the centuries: from the masterpieces of Jan Brueghel to Ai Weiwei and latest experimentation with digital technologies in contemporary art.
Fragile and powerful, flowers speak a universal language that transcends centuries and cultures. They narrate emotions, celebrate beauty, silently protest, and preserve age-old tales. It is precisely to them that the Chiostro del Bramante in Rome dedicates an extraordinary exhibition: “Flowers. Art from the Renaissance to Augmented Reality”,running from February 14 to September 14, 2025. Curated by Franziska Stöhr and Roger Diederen, in collaboration with Suzanne Landau, the exhibition offers a journey through five centuries of art, culture, and innovation.
‘Flowers are much more than simple decorative elements,’ explains Natalia de Marco, Artistic Director of the Chiostro del Bramante. ‘They act as universal symbols, epitomising every aspect of life: from resilience to spirituality, from love to conflict, from science to ecology.’ This sensory adventure comes to life in an exhibition that combines works from the past and the present, offering the public an unprecedented interpretation of the role flowers have played in the evolution of our history and society.
The masterpieces on display span from the 16th to the 21st century. Paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, tapestries, photographs, site-specific installations, and pieces using augmented reality intertwine to narrate the encounter between art and nature. Among the Masters exhibited are Jan Brueghel the Elder, depicting flowers as silent protagonists in a vast symbolic universe, suspended between sacred and profane; Girolamo Pini and his extraordinary attention to botanical detail; Edward Burne-Jonesand William Morris with their delicate floral representations, evoking an ethereal beauty typical of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
Alongside these historical works, visitors will see Ai Weiwei’s and Kapwani Kiwanga’s contemporary installations, where flowers become a metaphor for resistance, highlighting the social and political challenges of our time and the past.
A key feature of the exhibition is also the use of new technologies. Amongst the contemporary artists featured, Studio Drift seduces the public with their technological installations inspired by natural processes, while Kehinde Wiley offers a bold and vibrant interpretation of the floral theme. Miguel Chevalier explores the question of the naturalness and artificiality of flowers with his immersive installation and Rebecca Louise Law builds a fascinating corridor in which visitors will be literally surrounded by flowers, presenting a sensory experience as unique as the olfactory journey hosted in another area of the exhibition space. Even the exterior of the Chiostro del Bramante will take center stage, completely transformed into an earthly paradise thanks to the installation by Austin Young.

BEAUTY! a solo exhibition by Austin Young
The solo exhibition Beauty! by Austin Young opens on Friday, September 26 at 6 pm (and runs until November 29) at Mucciaccia Gallery Project.
A multidisciplinary artist whose unique style has stood out in both international and national contemporary art scenes for his ability to blend, using different expressive languages, pop culture and high art, underground exuberance and rigor, queer imagery and symbolism, Austin Young returns to the capital after the success of Temple of flowers at the Chiostro del Bramante, with a new site-specific project.
With this new installation, conceived for the gallery space in the historic center of Rome, the artist, who has chosen the city as a second home after Los Angeles, continues his exploration of the beauty of nature and flowers as universal symbols with multiple meanings: from resistance to spirituality, from love to conflict, from science to ecology. In his continuous search for beauty and the sublime, Young, who describes himself as an activist for beauty, presents a new body of work inspired by cosmology and the symbolic power of nature, transforming the space into a lush garden where flowers, human elements, and nature merge to create an engaging atmosphere that stimulates all the senses. The title of the exhibition is already a statement of intent: Beauty! not only evokes the beauty of nature but aims to use it as a powerful tool to address the ecological and social challenges of the present.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Silvana Editoriale, with an exhibition essay by Claudia Gioia

Concepita appositamente per gli spazi della galleria, l'installazione dell'artista trasforma l'ambiente in un giardino lussoreggiante: dove fiori ed elementi umani si fondono creando un'esperienza immersiva che stimola tutti i sensi.
Austin Young, Eve After The Fall, 2025, digital print on watercolor paper, with artist’s intervention on a found framed mirror, 117 x 68 cm

ARS IN HERBIS, AN ALCHEMICAL JOURNEY: INCARNATO
Beatrice Burati Anderson is delighted to present the first step of her new project, which is meant to be
unfolded in time starting on the occasion of the 60th Venice Biennale.
ARS IN HERBIS develops, both in a philosophical and poetic way, the alchemical theme of transformation, seen through the art of herbariums. ARS IN HERBIS is dedicated to Eliseo Burati (1924-1986), a prominent figure of researcher, pharmacist, herbalist, humanist and alchemist, and a pioneer on natural therapies since the Fifties. Part of his personal herbarium will be displayed in this exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Several artists and art techniques will be exhibited in the charming spaces of both galleries’ venues during the next months, following the development of a five-step journey into the different states of matter and existence.
EMANATIO, evokes the subtle, mysterious emanation which constitutes the “aura” of the material form and even survives it for a while.
IMPRESSIO has to do with both a photographic medium and the feeling (probably vehiculated by light) that we have of every living creature.
DISSOLUTIO is the prelude to abstraction, where the shape crumbles and it is then recomposed following logics other than literal ones.
DISTILLATIO is the art of extracting the very essence, and refers to an alchemical procedure and to poetry as well.
INCARNATIO closes the circle bringing us back to form, with all its enchanting and explosive multiplicity of shapes, colors, dimensions and sensorial wonder.
ARS IN HERBIS

Sposalizio del Mare (il Ratto di Venetia ) - by Austin Young / Fallen Fruit, 2024, a site specific artwork at Palazzo Cesari Marchesi in Venice, Italy presented by THE POOL NYC.
On Ascension Day, for hundreds of years, a sacrifice was made - a glorious golden ring was thrown into the water affirming Venice's dominion over the Adriatic Sea. The magic of this divine sacrifice was powerful enough to last centuries. Amid dwindling population, the fouling of her canals, ever encroaching tides, and short term rentals, we re-invoke this ancient vow. *Desponsamus te, mare, in signum veri perpetuique dominii! *We espouse you, sea, as a symbol of true and perpetual dominion!

ABOUT AUSTIN YOUNG / FALLEN FRUIT
Austin Young is a multidisciplinary artist whose trademark style interprets a nuanced visual language of beauty, pop culture, art history, folk art, and transgressive underground exuberance. Whether he’s working in photography and video-based modes of performative portraiture, engaging in assertive visibility for Queer culture, or advocating for a community-based resource sharing culture, Young’s interest is in illustrating the sublime qualities of humanity that moves us all forward.
Fallen Fruit is an art collaboration originally conceived in 2004 by David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young. Since 2013, David and Austin have continued the collaborative work. Much of the work they create is linked to ideas of place and generational knowledge, and it echoes a sense of connectedness with something very primal – our capacity to share the world with others. Recent permanent artworks and museum exhibitions include Chiotro del Bramante in Rome, Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Orto Botanico in Palermo, V&A in London, LACMA in Los Angeles, Manifesta 12 in Palermo, NGV Triennial in Melbourne, and more.

ABOUT IRENE MACHETTI
Irene Machetti (Venice, 1996) uses food as her artistic medium and a tool for anthropological and socio-cultural investigation, studying the traditions and norms that regulate it. Challenging ancient rites and customs, she creates edible installations and performative projects that establish a dialogue between art and food, involving the visitor's body and senses. Her research expands into the journalistic and curatorial field: Machetti writes about art and food on FAD Magazine (where she founded the column “FOOD ART” ) and Artribune.
Irene Machetti holds a BA in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art (London), followed by an MA at the LUISS Business School (Rome). The artist participates in projects between London and Italy, including: Collective Recipes (Open Space Contemporary, London, 2020); Contaminami (Cable Bakery, London, 2020 and Festival "I Tramonti di Tinia", Azienda Agricola Spada, Sutri, 2023); Mi sono scordata di dirti che (Tropismi della memoria, Rome, 2023); Art Diners with Catriona Gallagher (Rome, 2024).

In Signum Veri Amoris
Irene Machetti, participatory performance in three acts, 2024
In dialogue with the artwork Sposalizio del Mare (Il ratto di Venezia) / Marriage of the Sea (The Rape of Venice) by Austin Young / Fallen Fruit, the artist Irene Machetti presents the ritual In Signum Veri Amoris, a token of the ancient Venetian ceremony of the Marriage of the Sea.
The title recalls the formula the Doge – the highest official of the Republic of the Serenissima– would pronounce on the occasion of the symbolic marriage between Venice and the sea: ‘Desponsamus te, Mare, in signum veri perpetuique dominii’ (We marry you, Sea, in sign of our truthful and eternal dominion over you). This union, born from the desire of the Serenissima to ostentatiously display its power and its dominion over the waters, is in stark contrast with the current need to develop a sustainable coexistence between the city and its ecosystem.
To create this type of bond it becomes vital to transform the concept of dominion into one of protection, into a form of love that does not oppress but rather nurtures. Machetti thus proposes a new marriage with the sea, one made 'in signum veri amoris', in the name of love, inviting the public to respect the oath taken during the artistic performance.
Through specific acts and gestures, the artist calls upon the audience to abandon their usual perceptive schemas and to use their body and senses to fully engage in the performance. The ritual symbolically outlines a bridge between the ancient power of Venice, summarised in the decorative splendour of the Bucentaur, and the current state of a city marked by abandonment and a permeating kitsch. The references to the island city, so vividly and poetically described in Austin Young’s imagery, will keep refracting throughout the space, in a continuous game made up of presence and absence, sparkle and decadence: treasure chests of salt will reveal a fragile and porous ecosystem; opulent fragrances will take us far away, in a bygone era that was characterised by preciousness and power; grains of gold will be juxtaposed with transparent, delicate lagoon veils.
The performance will be activated by metaphorical and actual references to the colours and flavours of Venice: A journey through the history of the city evoked by distant and flamboyant ingredients and hints to the sea and the lagoon flowers. This ceremony will be marked by an olfactory journey, specifically crafted by Franco Profumiere Venezia. Starting from a fresh, marine scent, the last act will conclude with the rich perfumes coming from the Far East: a cultural horizon with which the Serenissima has woven solid and profitable ties.
Of particular relevance will be the gestures, which the artist has reconstructed starting from Western wedding ceremonies, a new viaticum to accompany visitors within a unique emotional experience, but with a strong territorial bond.
Technical sponsor: Franco Profumiere Venezia.

CONVERSAZIONI SACRE / SACRED CONVERSATIONS
CONVERSAZIONI SACRE / SACRED CONVERSATIONS, ACCADEMIA CARRARA, BERGAMO 2023
a new permanent artwork by Fallen Fruit at Accademia Carrara Museum
Piazza Giacomo Carrara, 82, 24121 Bergamo BG, Italy
Sacred Conversations happen everyday. Between a mother and child, a grown man and his father, a friend consoling another friend, a teacher and a student, and more. These small conversations shape our lives, inform how we love, expand our feelings, galvanize the world around us. It is these small moments of intimacy and trust that locks an experience into an understanding for a lifetime. They shape our character. They embolden our moral ethics. They enhance our ability for compassion towards others. It is said that the last one of these kinds of conversations you experienced is, in fact, the last sacred conversation you needed to have. In this way, it is a kind of blessing.
Created for Accademia Carrara, Sacred Conversations is an immersive artwork installation for the stairwell that connects the galleries of the historic museum. The artwork is sourced from hundreds of original photographs taken by the artists that include details from paintings, drawing, and etchings from the permanent collection. Along with documentation from the streets, parks, and piazzas of the city of Bergamo that include a variety of local fruits, flowers, birds, religious icons, and more. The title of the artwork ‘Sacred Conversations’ invokes a message about how the past relates to the present and often informs the future. And also, how sometimes in our lives, we travel from a place of darkness into light.
The artists explain that “‘The artwork is about the ritual of “place.” A type of consciousness celebrating everything everyday. The walking. The hellos. The arrivadecis. The thank yous and the welcomes. Bergamo is a continual fountain of greetings all throughout the day. In the piazzas, palazzos, the parks, the walking streets, the monuments, the cafes, the cathedrals, and on and on…”.
The collection at Accademia Carrara is often spiritual, and as artists, we became holistically inspired by the work of Lorenzo Lotto as well as the compassionate perspective of the entire collection. We spent many days exploring Carrara’s galleries and archives and photographed details. We looked for everyday objects in the collection – fruits, flowers, small animals, people’s hands, insects, pollinators, and more. These common elements of everyday life seem to form a bridge from the past into the present that connects all of us in our own unique pathway along the sacred journey of our lives.
To create this artwork, we immersed ourselves in the city of Bergamo. We walked all of the streets and alleys of the old city on the hill called “Citta Alta.” We explored cathedrals, monasteries, castles, parks, cafes, and libraries. We met with the city’s historians, and we toured the streets and historic buildings with expert guides. We photographed things that stand out in public spaces. We documented elements from the historic library, the cathedrals, the opera house, the botanical gardens, and details throughout Bergamo.
“This site specific artwork from our exploration of Bergamo considers the architecture of the building as the frame. The artwork itself becomes an experience for the visitor – a journey from darkness to light or from night into day. The visitor is the subject or protagonist. This is a type of metaphor for an everyday journey – and also a spiritual journey.,” says the artists’.

ART
Madness, which is often used as a synonym of creativity, is connected to art. Their relationship has become ever deeper after the earliest psychanalytic and neuroscientific studies of the beginning of past century. Surrealists were the first to reveal the inner and clearer link between insanity and art. After Surrealism, the two dimensions, the existential and the artistic ones, have been weaving together, merging and chasing each other throughout the 20th century till nowadays. The clear boundary between the medical domain and the poetic landscape gradually faded away, leaving space to open comparisons and reciprocal contaminations. This let the foolish creativity show her multifaceted masks.

Known for being a jewel of the Renaissance architecture in Rome designed by Donato Bramante, which hosts an amazing fresco by Raffaello Sanzio, Chiostro del Bramante has established itself as an important museum at both national and international level. For more than twenty years, it has been organising several modern and contemporary art exhibitions in dialogue with the Renaissance architecture of the Chiostro and in collaboration with many relevant art institutions and international museums, such as le Musée D’Orsay, le Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern and Tinguely Musuem. It’s with the organisation of the trilogy LOVE, ENJOY and DREAM curated by Danilo Eccher that Chiostro del Bramante continue his careful research and experimentation in the contemporary artistic discourse. In this occasion, the curator created original and site-specific projects, which presented the works of art of some of the most relevant contemporary artists.

CTM 2022 Exhibition:
The exhibition provides a look into various aspects of working collaboratively in pandemic times.
The works are the result of artistic exchanges across distances. Taken together, they point to potentials, effects, successes, and pitfalls of telematically mediated contact and encounters. How can connections, artistic exchange, and mutual understanding be developed and nurtured when physical togetherness is not possible?
The Exhibition in clouds the 6 part series, Jump Cut , curated by Dana Gingras/Animals of Distinction.

Jump Cut #3 (aka ‘Them’) is created by Austin Young and is the third installment of the six episode series of commissioned video artworks by Animals of Distinction. This short experimental film exploits transformative performance artists and drag stars Willam Belli, Laganja Estranja and Alaska Thunderfuck in a 21 minute surrealistic fairy tale which digs up backyard issues of identity, and morality. The three muses of subculture embody our collective hunger for meaningful relationships within marginalized spaces of mainstream Hollywood in this mini camp masterpiece, featuring music by queer icon, Peaches and performances by Love Connie, Johnny Smith, Siri and Nadya Ginsburg as ‘The Worm.’
Jump Cut #3 BTS: The behind the scenes short features a conversation with Austin Young, Dana Gingras, Peaches, Willam Beli, Laganja Estranja and Alaska Thunderfuck.

ENDLESS ORCHARD by FALLEN FRUIT – Launch Celebration and a Public Call to Action

THE ENDLESS ORCHARD FRUIT TREE ADOPTION EVENT:
1. You have space along a sidewalk or fence of a home, local business, apartment building, school, or community center. You must plant in private space or obtain a permit to plant the fruit tree in public space
2. The selected location is sunny and is being watered or can be watered regularly.
3. You agree to share the fruit tree with neighbors and passersby and map it on the Endless Orchard website.
4. Apply at info@fallenfruit.org to participate.
A PUBLIC CALL TO ACTION: JOIN US! PLANT A FRUIT TREE TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE. Let’s make an Endless Orchard. Plant a fruit tree next to the sidewalk, or along a fence near your home, school, community center, or business. On or next to public space. Water and care for your tree and map it on EndlessOrchard.com to share with others. Encourage local governments and elected leadership to take action and plant fruit trees in parks, public-rights-of-way, and along sidewalks. Dig up cement and make our cities like communal gardens where fruit can be harvested by everyone. Identify pre-existing fruit trees in neighborhoods and map them.
Fallen Fruit aims to position this project globally and engage communities around the world with the idea that generosity begets generosity. “Sharing is the definition of culture. Time, ritual, common interests, a meal, geography. It’s all about sharing.” -Fallen Fruit
During the pandemic, our collective experiences of everyday life have become more meaningful. Our need to be social and go outside became essential. As food shortages erupted due to quarantine related closures and global supply chains were interrupted, the drive to eat hyperlocale and grow edible gardens exploded.
We have already established public fruit parks in 19 different cities across the United States. Fruit tree plantings have been initiated across Southern California including Culver City, San Diego, Torrance, Riverside, San Bernardino, Downtown Los Angeles, Westlake, and across the United States in Buffalo, Columbus, New Orleans, Omaha, San Diego, Philadelphia, New York City, and more. What we’re excited about is that these fruit trees will be here for generations. In many cases, the project sites have been declared as works of art, so that those spaces must persist in the public realm as a place for sharing. The fruit trees would be replaced if necessary.
A forthcoming downloadable PDF will include all of our instructions on planting trees and sharing with the Endless Orchard.

This unique asynchronous wall coverings source’s materials from hundreds of original photographs taken by the artists in the gardens at different times of year — as well as historic watercolors and lithographs, by Mexican botanist Rafael Montes de Oca and English ornithologist John Gould, respectively. Orchids and hummingbirds dance around the interior spaces intermixed with seasonal favorites from the botanical collection. The extraordinary flora and fauna naturalized by this exotic setting is permanently embellished into the interior spaces of the chapel and contextualized by never ending organically merging colorfields.
