Horror Vacui was presented as part of Amore Chiama Colore at Fondazione D’ARC in Rome, Italy, on view through January 31, 2026. Curated by Giuliana Benassi, the exhibition takes inspiration from Piero Dorazio’s 1956 painting Amore chiama colore IV and explores the emotional, symbolic, and political power of color through works from the Foundation’s collection alongside new commissions by invited contemporary artists.
Austin Young’s installation contributes to this dialogue by examining color as a vehicle for emotion, memory, spirituality, and transformation within an immersive architectural environment.
I conceived Horror Vacui as a theater curtain—a stage for both the artwork and the people who inhabit the space. Rather than serving as a backdrop, the installation invites visitors to become participants, blurring the boundary between audience and performance.
