Austin Young’s Queen of the Boogie is a portrait of Hadda Brooks, the pioneering Los Angeles pianist, singer, and composer celebrated for her boogie-woogie style and commanding stage presence. Known as the “Queen of the Boogie,” Brooks helped shape the sound and image of mid-century blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues while also breaking ground as a Black woman in entertainment. Young’s portrait honors her charisma, elegance, and cultural legacy, presenting Brooks not only as a musical figure but as an icon of resilience, glamour, and self-possession.
