La Visione di Pietro is a permanent site-specific installation by Austin Young created for the dome above the altar of the Chiesa di Sant’Aniello d’Abate in Cosenza, Italy. Commissioned by Don Salvatore Fuscaldo, the work transforms the sacred architectural space into a radiant visual field of faith, welcome, memory, and community.
The installation is a digital collage composed of original photographs taken by the artist in Cosenza, combined with imagery drawn from various archives. Installed within the existing ceiling structure, the work responds directly to the church’s architecture, allowing the dome to function as both frame and vessel. The result is an artwork that exists in harmony with the sacred works already present while introducing a contemporary visual language of color, light, symbolism, and spiritual imagination.
The title refers to the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 10, in which Saint Peter receives a vision of a vessel descending from heaven filled with animals. In the story, the vision becomes a profound symbol of welcome, transformation, and the expansion of spiritual belonging. Young’s installation draws from this theological reference while rooting the work in the people, imagery, and visual memory of Cosenza.
“I wanted La Visione di Pietro to inspire the community, encourage storytelling, and create a welcoming and beautiful environment in which people could feel proud to gather. Don Salvatore expressed the desire that everyone entering the church should feel welcome. The existing ceiling functioned as a frame for this artwork, allowing it to exist in harmony with the architecture and the sacred works already present. In doing so, the installation brings joy, a sense of the sublime, and honors the spiritual gravity of the altar and its surrounding space.”
